Hole Plugging 101: 3D, 1 Hole

ree

We're entering week 6 of fantasy hockey and if you're like me, you've noticed a couple holes that need to be filled. And for me, the biggest hole that needs to be filled is my back end. That being said, let's rear back and take a look at 3 big D that can help plug that gaping hole on your back side.

The first plug boy we're going to look at is a Vegas golden knight, recently back from injury. Noah Hanifin is only owned in about 50% of leagues at the moment and that number is steadily climbing. Averaging close to 24 minutes a game since returning from injury last week, the big D-man has added 2 assists and 13 shots in his past 4 games. His steady presence on the blue line for a high flying Vegas offense will continue to produce opportunities for him to contribute in all categories. Scoop him up while you can before you go into Hanifilactic shock.

Let's move on to the division leading Montreal Canadians. A young team that is clearly coming into their own and some veteran leadership is always part of maturing. Enter Mike "mattress" Matheson. "Sleep country" has been a calming presence for the Habs, while putting up big minutes thus far to go along with 9 points and 38 blocked shots. The smooth skating defenseman is also a plus 10, suggesting he is well on his way to a bounce back season. Already owned in 65% of leagues, hop on the "big mattress" before you wet the bed. Especially if Hutson or Dobson sustain any sort of injury.

Last, but certainly not least, he is more of an acquisition at this point, only being available in 10% of leagues, Matthew Schaefer. This barely legal teen can fill those holes all by himself. Think of the league as a step mom stuck in the dryer. Enter helpful and eager to please step son Schaefer. You know how this ends up. Points being sprayed all over the leagues back. He set a rookie record for defenseman, with points in 6 straight games to start his career. Now up to 12 points, 6 of those coming on the PP by the way, to to go along with 48 SOG in 16 games, this kid is something special. Schaefer has the potential to be one of the greats, posdibly spoken in the same breath one day, with likes of Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey and Johnny Sins. Do what needs to be done to get this future legend on you squad.

Hanifin’s steadying Vegas like an actual defensive system exists. Matheson is flying through Montreal’s breakout like a greased pig, and Schaefer’s still young enough to actually believe in defense. Together, they’re the perfect fantasy mix — smooth, unpredictable, and slightly dangerous to handle without gloves.

Dozy out. Stay sleepy zzz
